Which color wheel for HL-P4663W?

Post by Lew » Fri May 08, 2009 3:43 pm

I have a Samsung HL-P4663 and need to replace the color wheel. It still works although it is so loud you have to turn up the volume to hear the TV sound. Is there a way to tell which wheel (air or ball bearing) mine has without actually taking it apart? Here is the info from the side:

Model# HLP4663WX/XAA
Serial# 38903CEXA01374X

It isn't worth it to pay someone to replace it on such an old TV. When I take it apart, I want to have the new wheel ready, but I can't order it until I know which one. Thanks.

Hi Lew,

Actually there's no way to tell which color wheel your TV has by the model number. You have to take it apart. Some TV models can use different types of color wheels.

Lew,

There is no way to tell which color wheel you have unless you take the TV apart. Sorry, but you'll have to open her up to find out the information you need. Good luck!!!

OK, I can't tell by the model or serial number. What about the sound of the failing wheel? Do air bearings sound different than ball bearings when they fail? I really don't want to take it apart twice or leave it in parts while I wait for the new wheel. My resistance to that new 50" for $1000 is fading.

Yes, the ball bearings will squeal because they are metal. What kind of noises are you hearing? Really it's impossible to tell which color wheel you have without taking it apart.

It sounds like a model airplane engine.

Lew,

It may be the ball bearings, but still I am unsure of which one. The best advice for you to find out is take it apart that's the only way.

Update. It was the air bearing (silver) color wheel. When I took it out, the small window in the assembly had a spot "burned" into the coating of the glass. I'm not sure if this would affect the picture, but I ordered a complete lens and assembly just to be safe.
