New lamp installed, worked for 3 hours

Post by ferrispd » Wed Apr 15, 2009 5:06 am

Hi Everybody, I've been searching here before I bought a replacment bulb for my DLP but now I actually need to post a qestion.

So I ordered a new bulb from discount merchant and installed it, it worked for 3 hours and then my TV quit on me. I took out the bulb....once it cooled and looked at it, It did not have the broken glass in it that was present in the bulb it replaced so I assumed it was okay. I looked up stuff online, read the troubleshooting tips that came with my new bulb and called DM about the problem. All the advise suggested that the ballast was bad and needed replaced. For reference the TV attempts to turn on, plays the melody and there are a series of clicking noises then the TV powers down and powers up again with the same noises and results, there is no light from the screen and the picture was fine before it died, no weird colors or anything.

So I ordered a new ballast from Sears and installed it and the lamp, and nothing has changed, same sounds. I want to be convinced that the bulb has failed but I thought I would turn to you guys before spending anymore money.

Thanks in advance,

-Pat

Pat,
I beleive D-M has a lamp testing fee of $20.. I would excersize that option to see if the lamp is indeed bad. Philips bulbs are very very very very rarely defective, so it may be a waste of $20... but at times a bad ballast may have damaged even a new bulb. Too bad for D-M if this happens but good for you because your bulb is under warranty with them. This is another reason I love D-M. They are the ONLY company that I know who keeps track of serial numbers on the lamps that they sell... I'm sure that helps them make sure that the customer knows that they actually tested their exact lamps in a lamp testing procedure. I've paid this fee 3-4 times and I've lost every time... The damn Philips bulbs are never bad out of the factory.

Next, the clicking noise at first though would be the symptoms of a bad ballast... You did good by replacing the ballast. Your next step is to take apart the color wheel to see if it is damaged or is having trouble spinning. If the color wheel doesn't start up, you will get the same symptoms that you are describing. Power cycle, then off (repeats 3 times).

Let us know how it goes.

Thank you for your advice, I has called them and set up an RMA to test the bulb. I hope that it is the problem. I am also very happy with DM, they have been very helpful and their ordering process was very good. I have recommended them to all my HDTV friends. I will update when I get the test results.

Can anyone tell me if there is a lamp door sensor for my TV, HLP5063W? I can't seem to find out and samsungparts.com doesn't list one.

Pat,
Let us know what happens. I'm willing to bet that the lamp is good, but being sure is worth the $20. The lamp door switch is not available from samsung for some reason, but our buddies at D-M have it here:

http://www.discount-merchant.com/We-pro ... amsung.htm

It's amazing what these guys have done for the TV service industry. They carry parts that you would never be able to buy, even from the manufacturer themselves.

I still have TV problems, as stated in my OP the bulb burned out so I ordered a new one from DM and then after installing it and running for 3 hours it quit on me. So evryone says its the ballast, i ordered one from sears parts and installed that. No luck, i get that clicking noise that the lamp is attempting to start. I send the lamp back to get tested, it comes back testing in working condition. I installed it again, I get the lamp door not closed message, so I tape the switch back and go through this again. The TV powers up and blinks the lamp light about 30 times, powers down and trys this 2 more times...then I get all three lights blinking. No fan noises or anything. Anyone have any ideas? It is a samsung hlp5063w.
Thanks in advance,
-Pat
