Hey Guys i see this alot on here, I am going to go out on a limb and say DMD board for my tv. I have also never replaced the lamp or ballast. First here is my info:
Samsung 56 DLP
HLS5688WX/XAA
The TV will run briefly, then go to a black screen still sound, but occasionally some white dots. THe lamp is on in the back of the tv.
There is no saw sound or fan sound of what i am going to assume color wheel. The tv does click/hum type noise when starting up. Sometimes shutting it down and restarting it allows it to come back but only for a short time. I would like to also add (reason for edit) that the hummm is more like a buzz sometimes a couple of times before it starts. Today i got it to come on but there is a set of vertical bars with about a 1" wide set of horizantal lines all the way down in a column and kinda "ghost" images.
So here is my guess off what i have read three choices:
Lamp (not sure since i see the white light from the back of the TV)
Ballast? (doubtful? not sure you tell me i do see that lamp lighting up would it do this if the ballast was bad?)
Color Wheel?
DMD Board fearing this as this is what i am guessing.
Also if this is the case i found the bulb here:

Ballast

Color Wheel

DMD Board (Not avail on DM, and this is the part number i found on partstore.com as the original one is not it, would this work with my model?)
THis is the one unavailable

Says this is substitute.

I dont want to buy a new tv as it has been a great tv for the past 4-5 years. Never done anything to it, no telling the hours on the lamp.
THanks in advance guys
Josh

Re: Shuts off, still sound, white dots, sometimes line
Hello theswoleguy.
Looks like you’re in a real pickle. First of all I also think you have a problem with your DMD board. However if you try to install the substitute DMD that you are contemplating its very probable that it wont be 100% compatible, and you’ll get some kind of distortions in the picture, or some factions on your remote wont work properly.
Also the lamp is probably responsible for no picture and sound only. Since you have never replaced the lamp, and they last an average of 2 – 3 years, 5 -6 years at most (and that’s starching it). Before you consider replacing the ballast you might want to discard the lamp by installing a new one. Now remember that this only resolves the no picture problem, but the DMD is responsible for the white lines & dots on the screen.
My suggestion to you is you try to contact Samsung; there is a probability that either they can send a tech to repair your problem or give you a newer tv at a very special price.
Keep me posted on any new developments and if you have any other questions fell free to ask.

Re: Shuts off, still sound, white dots, sometimes line
some of these tv's samsung fixes for free for the white dots. you have to call samsung and see if this is one of the tv's. they even fix them out of warranty. not all tv's are being fixed for free but some are.
