Problems with a Samsung HLR6167W

Hi everyone, I apologize in advance if this is a "repeat" of a previous problem: I haven't been able to find a post that detailed my exact situation. The picture was beginning to grow dim and would, at times, darken a little over the span of a few minutes. I had the grinding noise that seems to be the color wheel degrading and not knowing that it was the wheel, replaced the lamp. This helped the situation for a day or two and the picture was bright as it had ever been , only to be replaced with the gradually increasing "grinding sound", which would show up intermittently, sometimes when I started the tv and sometimes after being on for a while. This went on for a few days and then, one day, the wheel made a louder than normal sound and the colors were distorted and the picture went out completely. No grinding sounds, no picture. When I plug it in now, the standby temp light lights up. I push the power button and the lamp light flashes repeatedly but there is no picture and no listing of what the source is (tv, DVD, etc.). The lamp will light up in the back for a moment and then the tv will turn off, repeating all the steps again with a few clicks (of the ballast I think). My question is this: will replacing the color wheel fix these problems or is it something worse? I've seen the videos on changing the wheel and I'm fairly handy with electronics but I'd hate to buy the wheel and spend the time repairing it, only to have a tv that doesn't work with a new color wheel and lamp. Any advice you can give me will be appreciated!

I would say replace the color wheel first. do you hear the color wheel spinning up? This model is also known to have digital board issues with the same kind of issue you are having (lamp light flashing then after so long standby/temp light comes on), but since the color wheel was messing up I would start with that.

Well, after that loud sound on the last day I saw anything on the screen, I haven't heard the wheel. The reason I say the loud grinding sound was the color wheel was the fact that just before I heard the loud, crashing sound, the t.v. was kinda black and white with distorted colors. Would the color wheel going out stop all light from being visible on the screen? Honestly, I don't mind buying and installing the wheel as long as that is the ONLY thing preventing the t.v. from working. I've seen far too many posts where changing the wheel wasn't all that was needed and frankly, any more repairs than that wouldn't be worth it when I could get a plasma or lcd for less than a thousand with much better resolution and multiple HDMI inputs. So, if this sounds more than likely JUST a color wheel problem, please let me know. If other things might need to be replaced, in your opinions, then I'll probably just head to Best Buy. Thanks in advance for any help!!

It has to be spinning for the lamp to come on. Replace the color wheel and if it did shadder make sure to clean out all the broken color wheel.

Yup, color wheel, another piece of advice, make sure you have a voltage regulator outlet connected between your Tv and the wall jack, just to rule out any voltage irregularities.
And last but not least, did you reset your lamp timer when you replace the lamp?

No, I didn't get to reset the lamp counter, but I wouldn't think that doing so would affect the t.v. By the way, would you recommend getting the wheel with the housing or just the wheel. I've read some things about a change in the motor from the original one where there is an improvement in the original design? Please advise.

I would just replace the color wheel it's not that hard. I have the 50" verson of this tv an hlr5067w. I had my color wheel out when I was trying to find out what my issue was. You need to pull the light engine out. when you pull it out you will see a metal cover with fins. The color wheel is under that. There are screws to hold that cover on. remove them. If i remember right there are 2 screws holding in the color wheel, and two wires going to the color wheel. a flat ribbion and a wire with a plug. keep an eye on what way the ribbion plugs in. You dont want to plug it in backwards or you will be asking us more questions.

ps make sure to put the rubber gasket back into place as you put it back together. this keeps out the dust and will keep the color wheel running longer.

ps make sure it's new and not a used pull.

ps it cost less on http://www.samsungparts.com then ebay. there are two choices an L3 chassis or an L6 you will need to find out what chassis you have
