My DLP....issues......new lamp or color wheel?

My TV (HLR5067WX/XAA) is making this high pitched grinding noise. It happened this morning when I turned it on. It lasts for 1-2 seconds and repeats every 10-15 seconds. I removed the back lamp panel and this sound coincides with the lamp flickering. Almost like it is working to turn on and then gives up, and tries again every 10 seconds or so. after several "attempts" it stops and my display in front show all three (timer, lamp, standby/temp) flashing. Help!!!!!! thanks a million.

I think it's most probably your ballast failing. It might be trying to turn the lamp ON with no success. However I've never heard a grinding noise on any TV, the ballast usually makes a clicking noise. I think is the ballast because the lamp is flickering as if it wasn't getting enough power to be turned ON.

ok great...ill check into this......would this be a ballast issue if my picture was suddenly dimming temporarily for about 1-2 weeks prior to this failure? I noticed while playing a video game that (although very very slight) my picture would dim for about 5-20 seconds before a sudden brightening again. like a real slow flicker. this started about two weeks ago. you could hardly notice, but I was playing a game that had a constant color background when i noticed it first. Then the tv wouldn't start and my real issues began.
thanks again for all your time and help on this.

Yes, your symptoms coincide with a ballast issue, another possibility would be that the lamp is reaching the end of its life, but it doesn't explain the strange noise your hearing, however a defective ballast could possibly damage your lamp so in case the ballast replacement doesn't work I recommend you to change the bulb as well.
