52in DLP LG RU-52SZ61D Won't start, makes noise

Post by Inrevinc » Wed Sep 01, 2010 8:32 pm

I've used the TV for 5 years, it was a demo with the lamp changed when I bought it.

For the past month or so at startup the TV would start making a whirring sound, like a bad fan buzzing. It got pretty loud and would often last 3-4 minutes before stopping. Meanwhile I could do anything else normally with the TV. The TV would then work fine and dandy.

Today I wasn't so lucky. I turned on the TV and the usual sound came on but only louder. Then I heard a pop and the TV stopped. I tried turning it on again and the usual whirring sound came on then off, then on, then off again before the TV turned off again and the lamp sign lit 4 times.

What I'm trying to figure out is: is this whirring, buzzing sound at startup the clicking sound made by the ballast trying to light the bulb or am I in for a new color wheel?

well the best way to know which one is it, is the noise more mechanical (color wheel) if the buzzing sound electrical (ballast)

DEFINITELY mechanical thanks. I'll go browse the plasma TVs I guess, the LG requires a $400 part to replace the color wheel.
