try a new lamp. It's at the age when they go bad.

yes. the lamp maynot have enough mercery gas left inside it to light up bright. With the age of the tv it's always good to start with a new lamp.

How easy is it to replace the lamp. Could I who considers myself fairly handy, but with zero experience opening a tv figure it out? will the lamp come with replacement instructions? I've also heard the ballast might be a problem. How do I tell which it is without buying one and just trying it? Thanks
Start with the bulb, then move on to the ballast if necessary. Replacing the bulb is very easy.

Removing bulb housing:

Instead of buying complete bulb housing, just replace bulb itself.
